Clubs and Activities

Offering children a wide and balanced curriculum is fundamental at High Down; we like to allow children to experience a wide variety of activities during their time with us. We are proud of our extracurricular activities programme. Please have a look at what your child could do.  If you have any queries, or would like to sign your child up to a club,  please do not hesitate to contact the office.

Choirs, Musicians and Dance

Clubs are organised for dance leading up to the Bristol Dance Festival held at Weston Playhouse each year.  There are many opportunities for the children to sing.  We perform at Colston Hall in Bristol twice every year and there is a choir which meets every week that also incorporates the French Choir.

Many children in school learn to play a musical instrument and opportunities are provided throughout the year for them to perform, both in school and at other venues.  Orchestra meets each week.

Football

Children are given the chance to play football in school, through joining coaching sessions, organised inter-house competitions and school competitions. Boy’s and Girl’s teams are selected to represent the school in local and national competitions.

Cross Country

This is an activity which has recently been introduced to the school. Trials are held each year to select children to represent the school in this sport.

Swimming

Years 3 and 4 have the opportunity to swim throughout the year.  In addition to the annual swimming gala held at the Portishead Open Pool, Years 5 and 6 may be invited to take part in an external competition.

Cricket

The school has strong links with a local Club, who come into school from Easter onwards to coach.  We take part in both Boy’s and Girl’s Kwik Cricket tour tournaments and encourage our children to be as involved as possible. Children also get the chance to play in competitions and over the past 8 years both boys and girls teams have been Somerset Finalists.

Netball

Children get the opportunity to take part in inter-school competions during the year.  This is open to any children from Years 5 and 6.

Throughout the year there is also the opportunity for teams to take part in competitions organised by North Somerset School Sports Coordinators.

Tag Rugby

During the summer term there is an opportunity for any children from Years 5 and 6 to take part in Tag Rugby.  There is a tournament organized by North Somerset in which the school team enters.

Other Sports

We also have external providers who come in and offer opportunities such as athletics, gymnastics, tae-kwando, karate and Future Stars coaching.  These are all charged for and operate on a termly basis.  Keep your eyes open for the letters detailing information about these clubs.
